"Whether it is Harry Kane or Ronaldo, it doesn’t matter" -- Ally McCoist

Former Rangers star turned pundit AAllyMcCoist has called on England manager Gareth Southgate to drop captain Harry Kane if the Bayern Munich striker’s form does not improve during Euro 2024.

Kane recently netted his first goal of the tournament in England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark, following a goalless performance in the Three Lions’ 1-0 victory over Serbia. Despite opening his account, concerns persist over England’s attacking efficiency, with pundits criticizing Southgate’s tactical choices.

During the Denmark match, Kane was substituted in the 70th minute, making way for Ollie Watkins. McCoist believes that Southgate should be prepared to make bold decisions, including benching Kane if necessary.

“Stuart Pearce is 100% right when it comes to being bold enough to drop Harry Kane, I include everybody,” McCoist told BoyleSports.

“It’s similar to Cristiano Ronaldo; if it benefits the team, you think there’s a substitution required. Whether it is Harry Kane or Ronaldo, it doesn’t matter who it is. That is when the manager earns his corn.”

He added, “It doesn’t matter if it’s Harry Kane; if he’s not playing well, then it might be a better option with Ollie Watkins using his pace to run through.”

England’s next fixture is against Slovenia on Tuesday, a match that could see Southgate considering lineup changes to enhance the team’s attacking prowess.
