Where is Roman Abramovich now?

It is no secret that when people think of Chelsea today, all they remember is the club’s achievement under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.

In plain terms, Roman Abramovich made Chelsea and was the Chelsea fans remember today. Without his stake at the club, the Blues may have gone the routes of the Evertons, Aston Villas that we know of today. However, the Russian changed that when he bought the club in 2003 for £140m instead of North London side, Tottenham Hotspur.

Roman Abramovich not only bought the West London club, but his reign built the culture and tradition that many now recognize globally.

Roman Abramovich’s legacy at Chelsea FC is undeniable, but his life after selling the club has taken a dramatic turn.

Whatever happened to Roman Abramovich?

Following his forced exit in 2022 due to UK sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the once-prominent figure in English football has all but vanished from the sport he helped revolutionize.

With his £4.25 billion sale of Chelsea to Todd Boehly’s consortium, Roman Abramovich pledged that the proceeds would go to charity, but since then, little has been known about the billionaire’s whereabouts.

Recent reports suggest Abramovich has settled into a quieter life in Istanbul, acquiring a property in the Turkish city, though residents remain tight-lipped about his presence. His famed Eclipse superyacht was spotted in the country, but he hasn’t been publicly linked to any football ventures since.

Despite rumors that he might purchase a Turkish club, his spokesperson dismissed these as “entirely false,” adding to the air of mystery surrounding his next moves.

However, Abramovich’s name is back in the spotlight—not for new investments, but for his past. The Premier League has launched an investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving the transfers of former Chelsea stars Willian and Samuel Eto’o during Abramovich’s reign.

Chelsea’s new ownership, in their due diligence process before acquiring the club, flagged these transactions to regulators, and a full probe is underway. While the outcome remains unclear, it’s another twist in Abramovich’s fascinating post-Chelsea life.

From Istanbul to Tel Aviv, and occasionally spotted in Dubai, Abramovich seems to have left football behind, reportedly no longer keeping up with the sport that defined his public life for nearly two decades. But with the Premier League’s investigation hanging in the balance, his past in football may not be as distant as it seems.

Will Abramovich’s shadow still loom over Chelsea FC despite his retreat from the sport? Only time will tell.
