What my family does for a lot of Nigerians — Davido
In a recent interview on the American podcast ‘Business Untitled,’ Grammy-nominated artist Davido Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, opened up on the role his family plays in Nigeria’s energy sector and his personal evolution within the music industry.
During the podcast interview, Davido disclosed that his family holds ownership of four power plants, which play a substantial role in supplying electricity to a considerable portion of Nigeria.
He said,
“I once tried to go into cryptocurrency because Nigeria is big on crypto. Apart from that, me and my family have like four power plants worth a lot of money. We distribute energy to most of Nigeria.
“My wife is into culinary. We are trying to start a restaurant for her. But my main business is what I love; my music.”
This revelation underscores the multifaceted business endeavors of the Adeleke family, extending beyond Davido’s celebrated music career.
While discussing his entrepreneurial ventures, Davido shared aspirations to venture into the culinary world with his wife, Chioma, expressing plans to establish a restaurant. Emphasizing his passion for music, he reiterated that despite diverse interests, his primary focus remains his musical endeavors.
In a notable shift, Davido announced his departure from the ‘Afrobeats’ genre, a term commonly used to categorize African music globally. Expressing dissatisfaction with the genre’s tendency to homogenize diverse musical styles, he asserted his preference for a more nuanced label, referring to his music as ‘Afrofusion.’
This departure from the conventional confines of musical categorization reflects Davido’s artistic evolution and a broader conversation within the African music industry regarding genre classification and artistic freedom.
