“What I won’t do after getting married” — Toke Makinwa

Media personality, Toke Makinwa has no intention in following accustomed tradition that has been associated with women who venture into marital life.

According to Toke Makinwa, who recently voiced her opinion about marriage and the life that comes with it, the media personality shares that she has no interest in altering her surname upon reciting her marital vows.

She shares that her name has become very significant to her brand, which she has worked to craft diligently over the years.

During a segment on her podcast, Toke articulated her stance, drawing from her past experience of retaining her maiden name during her previous marriage, which ultimately facilitated an easier transition post-divorce without the complications of a name reversal.

“I kept my last name when I got married. It was supposed to be Toke Makinwa-Ayida, but it was only within the confines of our home that he referred to me as Mrs. Ayida,” Toke disclosed, elaborating on her decision.

“I hope that whoever I end up with next would actually embrace it because Toke Makinwa remains. I prefer not to use a hyphen, but my children can carry their father’s surname.”

Citing practical reasons for her choice, Toke highlighted the convenience she experienced during her previous marriage, where essential documents like bank details and her passport remained unchanged.

“In my marriage, my bank details, my passport, nothing changed. Imagine what I would have gone through trying to change it back when we got divorced. I have built this brand with my blood, sweat, and tears.”
