What Aquaman director has to say about the Lost Kingdom

Director James Wan recently shared thrilling details about the highly anticipated sequel to “Aquaman” titled “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wan discussed the film’s unique storytelling approach, its thematic exploration, and the progress made in its development.

Navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the DC Universe’s reboot led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Wan faces the challenge of maintaining the distinctiveness of the Aquaman series. Recognizing the various versions the DCU has undergone, Wan acknowledges the need for adjustments while ensuring “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” stands on its own.

Reflecting on the challenges, Wan stated,

“The DCU has been through lots of different versions, and one of the things that was challenging about this film was keeping track of what’s going on. Fortunately, the Aquaman universe is pretty far removed from the rest of the world.”

He added, “We’re going to many different underwater kingdoms that are not necessarily related to what’s happening with the other movies and characters, so we’re stand-alone in that respect.”

Optimistic about the film’s progress, Wan highlighted the upcoming Directors Guild of America contract negotiations as a significant milestone in the production timeline.

Notably, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will take a slightly more serious and thought-provoking tone compared to its predecessor. The film aims to address timely issues, particularly focusing on the theme of climate change.

Wan shared,

“It’s a big movie. I cannot wait for people to see it. I think people are going to be excited to see that this movie is quite different from the first movie in terms of tone.”

He continued, “We’re not afraid to lean into that in a big way because the Aquaman comic book, even way back when, has always been environmentally conscious. He’s always been someone who’s fought to keep the ocean clean, and it feels more relevant in the world that we’re living in today.”

While the sequel delves into deeper themes, Wan assured fans that it will retain the enjoyable action-fantasy elements that made the first film a success. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” promises to offer an engaging experience, combining significant topics with thrilling undersea adventures.

Jason Momoa, who debuted as Aquaman in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” will reprise his role in the sequel. Following the success of his standalone film, Momoa’s portrayal of the underwater superhero has become an integral part of the DC Universe. Fans can anticipate his appearance in “The Flash” before his return in the highly anticipated “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”

As production continues and further details emerge, fans eagerly await the release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” to witness the evolution of their beloved underwater hero and the thought-provoking storytelling it promises to deliver.
