We were our own demons — Erik ten Hag on FC Twente

Manchester United on Wednesday night got themselves into banter territory when they failed to get past Dutch side FC Twente in the Europa League after playing out a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has now cleared the air on the frustrating night where Manchester United looked certain of a win at their home turf when Christian Eriksen had put the premier league side ahead in the first half. However, FC Twente shut down any fear of a defeat on the night when they leveled up in the second half to share the points with the English side.

Erik ten Hag didn’t hold back after his side’s disappointing 1-1 draw against FC Twente in their Europa League opener.

Despite taking an early lead through Christian Eriksen’s thumping strike, the Red Devils failed to finish the job, leaving Ten Hag visibly frustrated with his players’ inability to kill off the game.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Ten Hag lamented his team’s lack of consistency, claiming they “kept Twente alive” and ultimately paid the price for a defensive lapse, as Sam Lammers punished Andre Onana at the near post.

The Dutch boss didn’t mince words, admitting that United were the architects of their own downfall after allowing their intensity to drop in the second half.

“In the second half we dropped the level, gave the goal away. We didn’t finish it off, we had to go for the second goal and so they stayed alive and we got punished with a mistake from ourselves.”

Following the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace last weekend, this is another shaky performance for Manchester United after impressing in the first half.
