“We want to prevent the Japa movement” — Nigeria Minister
One word at the tip of every Nigerian youth in the past 8-10 years has been how to ‘Japa’. In other words, how to escape the country following the troubled times that has plagued the country’s economy, national security and other challenges that have affected the Nigerian youths.
The ‘Japa’ slang in fact has become so famous that the Nigerian government have echoed sentiments against it, in hopes of encouraging citizens to stay in the country than flee elsewhere for greener pastures.
However, ‘talk’ they say is cheap, and with the economy failing every passing day, the reality of ‘Japa’ keeps falling into the mind of every Nigerian youth.
The Minister of Youth Development in Nigeria, Jamila Ibrahim, however has conveyed a message of assurance to the nation, highlighting the Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to addressing the issue of mass youth emigration from the country.
Ibrahim made this declaration on Friday during a youth engagement event known as the ‘Youth Agenda Summit,’ which centered around the theme ‘Actioning the Nigeria We Want.’
The summit was organized by ILEAD AFRICA, providing a platform for discussions on youth-related issues.
Represented by an Assistant Director in the Ministry, Oyekan Adedoyin, the Minister encouraged the nation’s youth to harness their innovative potential in contributing to the nation’s development.
She underscored the importance of young people being active participants in the nation’s growth, while also emphasizing the government’s role in facilitating a conducive environment for progress.
In her remarks, Minister Ibrahim stated,
“Nigeria, in its current state, is indeed complex, but we must actively engage in the nation’s building process.
“The government is fully committed and actively working towards this goal.
“A significant step taken by the government is the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Youth, with a substantial representation of youths in key positions. This is a call to action for our young citizens.”
She acknowledged that while the government cannot prevent individuals from seeking opportunities abroad, it is making concerted efforts to create an enabling environment that encourages people to stay and invest in their homeland.
The Minister hinted at the forthcoming introduction of innovative measures to retain talent within the country.
Minister Ibrahim urged,
“As we embark upon this transformative journey, let us seize this moment to amplify the voices of our youth, cultivate collaborative endeavors, and ignite positive change.”
