“We have the heart and soul, they don’t”—Liverpool Chairman on Man City

It shouldn’t be called a bad blood rivalry when talking about Liverpool versus Manchester City, compared with derby games against United or Everton for Liverpool, but more of an envy of success.

Both clubs, both teams are envious of what each other have achieved over the last 6 years, and very so often, the two would one way or the other, try to belittle the other’s achievements or at least find an excuse to write the other off.

Guardiola has done it, Jurgen Klopp is guilty of doing it no matter how much he praises the City team, the Man City players are guilty of throwing shades at Liverpool, and vice versa.

Now, it most certainly comes the turn of Liverpool chairman, Tom Werner.

Tom Werner recently sat with British publication, The Athletic to discuss the club’s future and also the current season.

Admittedly, the chairman said no one within the board hierarchy will want to think of a day Jurgen Klopp leaves the club, as it would be hard to replicate the German’s success at the club or even his personality in general.

But talking about how he felt seeing his team compete against the likes of Manchester City, who had edged Liverpool to the Premier League title, Werner had quite the strong word.

“They certainly have more resources than we do, but we have the heart and soul of Liverpool on our side. We certainly have made it clear that part of the reason that we came into this over 10 years ago was that FFP [financial fair play] would be with us.

“I’m hopeful that they will be strengthened, because it allows all clubs, not just Liverpool, to compete under a very fair system. Certainly, it hasn’t been a deterrent for some, but we work at it.” the Chairman said, alluding to the fact that City were at a point accused of being in violation of the Football Fair Play rules and had gotten away with it.

Since Pep Guardiola came into the Premier League, City are alleged to have spent £933.21million while the Reds have spent £479.56million.
