“We are killing our culture” — Basketmouth calls out Nollywood
Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has delivered a no-holds-barred critique of Nollywood’s portrayal of the country’s rich cultural heritage.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the ace entertainer slammed the industry for missing a golden opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s culture through epic movies.
Basketmouth didn’t mince words, expressing disappointment at how recent epic movies lack authenticity and depth.

“I see epic movies, and they look like stage plays,” he lamented.
“We had a great opportunity to showcase our culture, and most of the filmmakers blew it up. They ruined that great chance.”
While acknowledging a handful of impressive works, the stand-up comedian believes the majority fail to live up to the potential of properly celebrating Nigeria’s diverse traditions.
Despite his criticism, Basketmouth remains hopeful.
“I believe that we still have the opportunity to get it right. Let’s hope we have another chance to strike at it.”
The Nigerian movie industry has over the years fallen out of favor with many Nigerians due to its quality, however, Bright Okpocha is of a different criticism of the industry.
