WAEC urges Labour unions to prioritize students amid planned strike
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has called on organized labour unions to consider the welfare of students amidst their planned indefinite strike.
Dr. Amos Dangut, WAEC’s national office head, emphasized this plea during a press interview, highlighting the potential disruption to students’ academic pursuits.
Recognizing the concerns of both labour unions and Nigerian workers, Dr. Dangut noted that many WAEC employees are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) or the Trade Union Congress (TUC), both of which have scheduled a strike to commence on Monday.
“WAEC has noted the impending indefinite strike by NLC and TUC starting Monday, June 3,” stated Dr. Dangut.
He underscored the longstanding collaboration between WAEC and the unions, essential for fulfilling the council’s mandate.
Dr. Dangut gently reminded the unions of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024, already in progress across Nigeria and other member countries.
“The week from June 3 to June 7 includes the examination papers for Physics, Economics, Government, and Civic Education,” Dr. Dangut highlighted, stressing the potential setbacks students may face due to any disruption.
“We appeal to all stakeholders and the unions to cooperate to ensure the smooth conduct of the examination,” Dr. Dangut urged. “WAEC remains committed to excellence and serving the Nigerian people.”
Dr. Dangut’s plea underscores WAEC’s commitment to ensuring minimal disruption to students’ academic endeavors, urging cooperation from all parties involved.
