Ukraine has launched drone attacks on multiple oil refineries deep inside Russian territory, escalating tensions as President Vladimir Putin aims for a re-election.

According to a Ukrainian defense official on Wednesday, the strikes are part of a strategic move to diminish Russia’s economic capabilities. The targeted refineries include facilities in Ryazan, Kstovo, and Kirishi, all significant to Russia’s oil production infrastructure.

Additionally, the Novoshakhtinsky oil refinery in Rostov-on-Don was reportedly hit.

This marks the second consecutive day of Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy sites, indicating a heightened level of cross-border conflict. Ukrainian sources claim their objective is to deprive Russia of vital resources and disrupt its war efforts.

The attacks coincide with reports of pro-Ukrainian groups launching cross-border assaults and purportedly gaining control of the village of Tyotkino in Russia’s Kursk region. The situation remains tense, with ongoing exchanges of fire reported in the area.

In response to the strikes, Russia’s defense ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 58 Ukrainian drones overnight, underscoring the severity of the situation. Despite claims of damage to the oil facilities, officials have confirmed only two injuries in Ryazan.

Social media footage from the targeted refineries depicted significant smoke plumes, indicating substantial damage. Ukrainian intelligence maintains that these facilities are not merely civilian installations but play a critical role in supporting Russia’s military operations.

The timing of the attacks, just days before Russia’s presidential election, adds a political dimension to the escalating conflict.

Putin, widely expected to secure a fifth term, used a televised interview to downplay Ukrainian military successes, attributing them to failures on the battlefield and emphasizing the importance of controlling the narrative.
