Virgil van Dijk Trolls Jamie Carragher and Trent Alexander Arnold

The premier league season hasn’t been going all that well for Liverpool lately, but the tough periods did not stop defender, Virgil van Dijk from sitting and having a chat with Manchester United legend, Gary Neville in his podcast show, The Overlap.

On The Overlap show, the Dutchman had a couple of time to spare with the ex-Red Devil, discussing on a variety of issues, some of which detailed the circumstances surrounding his move to Liverpool and his choice of Jurgen Klopp over the likes of Pep Guardiola during his last days at Southampton.

Virgil van Dijk was quite humble with his responses though, showing a lot of honesty while discussing with Gary Neville regarding personal matters that surrounded football and other players involved in the game such as Trent Alexander Arnold and the likes of Jamie Carragher.

The former Southampton man had quite a lot to say when it came to Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, and his thoughts on what he felt the player would be like in today’s modern game.

Knowing Gary Neville’s banter filled relationship with Jamie Carragher, it was very much expected a question regarding van Dijk’s opinion of Carragher and whether the Liverpool born ex-defender could fit into Liverpool’s current eleven.

According to Virgil van Dijk, he responded with a cheeky dig, asking: ‘You’re not having him in the eleven are you?’ before going on to state his opinion;

“Not even in the first 20. He will be in the stands.” He answered.

Speaking on the dilemma of Trent Alexander Arnold versus Reece James, the Liverpool centre back echoed similar sentiments of others, admitting the likes of James and Kyle Walker come ahead of his teammate if the England XI is put into consideration.

The Dutchman stated:

“Reece James also is outstanding, Kyle Walker, but I definitely think Trent should be at least in the squad.”

Virgil van Dijk went further to reveal the one striker who always gave him a lot of troubles in defense, which to Gary Neville’s surprise was former Chelsea and Arsenal striker, Olivier Giroud.

“Funnily enough, Giroud. I feel like I got him, but in some way he always managed to score.” The Centre back revealed.

“Whether it’s with Arsenal, Chelsea or France, and I said to him, when we won the league and we were 3-0 up or something and he scored a crappy goal, you scored again!

“So I would say he is the guy who scores against me and is just an annoying person, but there are so many amazing strikers I’ve played against – Messi, Aguero and Haaland is a difficult one because he has everything.”

To Virgil van Dijk, Olivier Giroud was that boogeyman that he felt he had taken care of but somehow came into the game to score past him repeatedly, without him knowing.
