Veteran Rapper Diddy Discovered Paying $5000 For The Unauthorized Hit Song ‘Every Breath You Take,I’ll Be Missing You’
Rapper and entrepreneur Diddy, also known as Sean Combs, has reportedly been paying a hefty sum of $5,000 a day to musician Sting for the unauthorized use of his hit song “Every Breath You Take” in Diddy’s tribute track “I’ll Be Missing You.”
Released in 1997, “I’ll Be Missing You” was a dedication to Diddy’s close friend and fellow rapper, Notorious B.I.G. (also known as Biggie Smalls), who was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting the previous year.
The song featured vocals from singer Faith Evans and prominently sampled Sting’s iconic 1983 hit “Every Breath You Take.”
However, it appears that Diddy did not seek permission from Sting to use the sample, leading to a legal dispute between the two artists.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Diddy revealed that he has been paying Sting $5,000 a day for the use of the sample, and that the two have since become “very good friends.”
The news has sparked controversy among music industry professionals and fans alike, with some criticizing Diddy for not obtaining proper clearance for the sample and others commending him for taking responsibility and making amends with Sting.
The incident also highlights the complex and often contentious issues surrounding copyright and intellectual property in the music industry.
