US, UK, Canada warn citizens ahead of Nigeria protests
The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued security alerts for their citizens in Nigeria, cautioning them about potential violence during nationwide protests set to begin August 1, 2024.
In separate travel advisories, the three countries warned their nationals to avoid areas where confrontations between security agencies and protesters might occur.
The US Mission in Abuja noted the potential for disruptions such as roadblocks, checkpoints, and traffic congestion. “According to media reports, nationwide protests are expected in Nigeria from July 29th to August 5th, 2024. Past protests have included roadblocks, checkpoints, and physical confrontations,” the advisory stated.

The UK High Commission issued a warning about possible protests between July 29 and August 10 in major cities, including Abuja and Lagos. British nationals were advised to avoid large crowds and stay updated through media. The advisory read, “Political rallies, protests, and violent demonstrations can occur with little notice. Avoid crowded public places and events that attract large crowds. If you encounter a threatening situation, move to safety immediately.”
The Canadian government similarly cautioned that nationwide demonstrations planned from July 29 to August 5, 2024, could disrupt traffic and public transportation and may escalate into violence.
The planned protests, driven by widespread discontent over economic hardships, have gained momentum on social media. Nigerians are facing severe inflation and economic challenges exacerbated by government policies such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows.
