UK Govt reacts to murder of Sokoto student, Deborah, issues directive to security agencies

The United Kingdom government has seemed fit to react over the death of Sokoto State University student for alleged blasphemy.

The United Kingdom has condemned the gruesome killing of Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, for insulting prophet Muhammad.

Recall that a young lady identified as Deborah Samuel was beaten and set ablaze by her Muslim colleagues for allegedly blasphemy against Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Reacting to Deborah’s murder, Catriona Laing, British high commissioner to Nigeria, has condemned the killing of Deborah.

Taking to her Twitter handle on Friday, May 13, Laing called on security agents to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book.

I condemn the murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, and urge the police and relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrators of this horrific act are made to face justice in line with the law,” she wrote.

In a recent event, however, two of the recognized angry mob that, dragged her out before beating her were arrested by the authorities as the school had closed down over the event.

The police in a statement by its spokesman, Sanusi Abubakar, said two suspects had been arrested while others identified in the video of the incident would be fished out.

He said the state command received a distress call from Shehu Shagari College of Education in the morning hours stating “that students were rioting over one female student named Deborah Samuel, a level two student, who was accused of making a social media post that blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Students forcefully removed the victim from the security room where she was hidden by the school authorities, killed her and burnt the building.

“The students banded together with miscreants and barricaded the Sokoto/Jega road,” he said.

He explained that upon receiving the information, the DC Operations led a team of policemen and all other operational commanders in the state to the school where the road was cleared and the situation was brought under control.

Two students were arrested in connection with the crime committed.

“The school has been closed down by the school authority, and policemen were deployed to give tight security coverage.

“The Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, Kamaldeen Okunlola is appealing to members of the public to go about their lawful activities and should not panic as the situation is under control.

“Meanwhile, the suspects in the viral video on Twitter were spotted and will be nailed soon,” he added.
