UK Government Set To Give Politicians Involved In Electoral Violence Visa Ban

Published

The United Kingdom government has announced that politicians engaged in or incited electoral violence and other anti-democratic behaviors during the March 18 governorship and state assembly elections in Lagos, Rivers, and Enugu states in Nigeria will likely face a visa ban.

The British High Commission stated that it is collating relevant information to take action against such individuals.

The Commission commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for improved logistics during the governorship elections but observed violence and voter suppression in numerous voting locations.

The UK urged leaders to distance themselves from inflammatory ethnoreligious language and called for peaceful legal challenges to the process or outcome of the elections.

The British Commission applauded the commitment to democracy by many Nigerians despite being faced with intimidation and hostility.
