Arsenal Only Defeated Chelsea’s Second Team—Rio Ferdinand

The season started with Premier League club, Arsenal in fine form, taking out opponents one by one as they came, with pundits wondering if Arsenal had taken over Liverpool’s place at the top to challenge Manchester City.

But it appears all those talks were hasty comments made in response to a team that was only flattering its audience with false promises.

Fast-forward to the middle of the season, fans have began to see the famous Arsenal, Europe has come to know, owing to recent performances from a couple of games that have seen lackluster play.

Prior to their 2-0 defeat at PSV, the Gunners last weekend, dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Southampton, bringing title favorites, Manchester City into the fold as Arsenal saw their lead at the top of the Premier League cut to just 2 points.

After his team suffered their first UEFA Europa League loss on Thursday night, a 2-0 loss to Dutch team PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was clearly upset.

At the Phillips Stadion, goals in the second half from Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong gave the Eredivisie team the victory.

Despite the loss, the Gunners remain in first place in Group A of the Europa League, leading PSV by just two points. With their victory, PSV became the second club in their group to advance to the knockout rounds, joining Arsenal.

Arteta expressed his unhappiness after the game while stating that his squad needed to start over.

“Yeah, it’s the end of a long run. Today is the first defeat after a long, long period. It’s time to reset, and analyse what happened, obviously congratulations to PSV they were the better team, they deserved to win the game, there’s no question about it.

“We were nowhere near our level, especially the way we competed.

“I don’t know, we’ve had periods where we were excellent and periods where we suffer,” Arteta said when asked if he saw the result coming. “For sure, we haven’t had the consistency throughout 95 minutes to maintain the level that we want and this is the next challenge and the next aim for this team.

“In the second half, the moment something went wrong we just went down and we didn’t find moments to give us some hope to react and get something out of the game.”

Back in the Premier League, Arsenal will now face 20th-placed Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium in a top-of-the-table vs. bottom-of-the-table matchup.

Arsenal surrendered points in a 1-1 draw with Southampton last weekend, allowing Manchester City to close the gap on them at the top of the Premier League.

Before playing two more Premier League games and one Carabao Cup match before the World Cup break in November, they will host FC Zurich in their final group match in the Europa League.
