Court adjourns tribunal hearing contesting Tinubu’s victory.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has announced that the pre-hearing proceedings for the petition filed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and its presidential candidate, Chichi Ojei, will resume on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

The APM is contesting the victory of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in the presidential elections held on February 25.

The petition, identified as CA/ABJ/PEPC/04/2022, raises several concerns regarding the presidential election results, citing irregularities and the mutilation of election results as grounds for the challenge. The APM argues that Tinubu did not have a validly nominated vice president and questions the validity of his sponsorship by the APC.

The respondents in the petition, listed as the 1st to 5th respondents, include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Bola Tinubu, Kashim Shettima, and Kabir Masari.

During the proceedings, a five-member panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani acceded to the request of the petitioner’s counsel to adjourn the proceedings until Thursday of the following week.

The decision to postpone the hearing was made after the petitioner’s counsel sought an extension, and the respondents’ counsel confirmed their agreement with the request.

The adjournment provides both the petitioner and the respondents with additional time to prepare and present their respective cases before the tribunal.

The complexity of the issues raised and the significance of the case necessitate a comprehensive examination of the evidence and legal arguments.

The APM’s petition against Tinubu’s victory highlights the importance of the electoral process and the adherence to established procedures.

The tribunal’s impartiality and commitment to upholding the principles of justice and fairness in electoral matters are paramount as it carefully evaluates the claims put forth by the petitioner and the responses from the respondents.

As the pre-hearing proceedings continue on May 18, all parties involved anticipate a rigorous and fair evaluation of the evidence presented. The outcome of this petition will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the political landscape and the legitimacy of the presidential election results.
