Transfer: Chelsea, Aston Villa agree in principle

Aston Villa have made a major statement ahead of the new season by reaching an agreement to sign highly-rated left-back Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

This move marks the first significant piece of business for Villa as they prepare to compete in the Champions League after securing a top-four finish in the Premier League under Unai Emery.

David Ornstein reports that Villa have negotiated a deal with Chelsea for the 22-year-old Dutch international, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. During his stint in Germany, Maatsen was instrumental in helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final.

Despite Maatsen’s ÂŁ35 million release clause specific to Dortmund, Villa and Chelsea have agreed on a fee slightly above that figure. The Midlands club is currently working to finalize personal terms with the player, who is expected to sign a six-year contract.

Unai Emery, a known admirer of Maatsen, is eager to add the talented defender to his squad ahead of the new campaign. Maatsen, who is currently with the Netherlands national team for Euro 2024, was an unused substitute in their recent 3-0 victory over Poland.

Maatsen’s career has seen him gain valuable experience through loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Dortmund. At Chelsea, he made 12 league appearances, though most came as a substitute. His contract at Stamford Bridge was extended by 12 months in January, pushing its expiry to June 2026.

This signing represents a significant step for Aston Villa as they bolster their squad to compete among Europe’s elite next season.
