Transfer: Arsenal to battle Spurs for Bologna star

The summer transfer window could receive a significant boost for Arsenal if they manage to secure one of their top targets, Riccardo Calafiori, while simultaneously thwarting local rivals Tottenham Hotspur’s efforts to sign the Bologna centre-back.

The north London clubs have witnessed a shift in the power balance in recent years, with Tottenham finishing above Arsenal for several consecutive seasons. However, Mikel Arteta’s side has reestablished its dominance in north London, challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title over the past two campaigns.

Despite their strong performances, Arsenal have fallen short in their title pursuits, leaving sporting director Edu Gaspar with the task of strengthening the squad for the upcoming season. One player who has caught the attention of both Arsenal and Spurs is Riccardo Calafiori.

The ongoing Euro 2024 tournament has slowed down transfer activities but has also provided clubs with an opportunity to scout potential signings more closely. Among the standout players is Spain’s Nico Williams, who has attracted interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham. However, Calafiori, a key player for Bologna and an Italy international, is emerging as a top target for the north London rivals.

According to TuttoJuve, both Arsenal and Tottenham are showing strong interest in the 22-year-old defender for his transfer from Bologna. Juventus is also keen on Calafiori but is hoping he will choose to stay in Italy. The two Premier League clubs, however, are in a stronger financial position to make a move for the talented centre-back.

Calafiori’s impressive season in Serie A earned him a call-up to Italy’s Euro 2024 squad. Despite Luciano Spalletti’s side’s unconvincing progression from Group B, Calafiori stood out, attracting attention from several top clubs.

As Arsenal and Tottenham prepare to battle it out for Calafiori’s signature, his potential arrival in north London could significantly bolster either squad’s defensive options. Arsenal, in particular, will be looking to secure the young defender as they aim to build a team capable of finally overcoming Manchester City and capturing the Premier League title.
