Tottenham vs. Liverpool could be replayed -- Lawyer says

Tottenham vs. Liverpool was a tie that took away the excitement of the premier league weekend, owing to so many controversies that resulted from the game.

However, according to a Sports Lawyer, Stephen Taylor Heath, the game could be replayed again if Liverpool pushes on with the case after the VAR audio was released to the public on Tuesday.

This decision hinges on an appointed commission’s ruling regarding alleged breaches of the laws of the game by match officials and VAR, primarily concerning the disallowed goal scored by Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

The intense match, riddled with VAR decisions, concluded with a 2-1 victory for Tottenham over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side.

The Reds’ frustrations were further compounded when Curtis Jones received a red card following a contentious VAR review. Additionally, Diogo Jota was sent off after earning two yellow cards upon his second-half introduction.

The game saw Spurs securing a dramatic stoppage-time winner, as Joel Matip inadvertently netted into his team’s goal.

However, one of the key moments in the match was the disallowance of Luis Diaz’s seemingly legitimate goal during the first half.

The audio recording of the incident now been released to the public, brings to light a concerning aspect of the PGMOL’s VAR upload, which has not gone unnoticed by fans.

Liverpool, in response to the controversial decision, submitted a formal request to the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) for access to the VAR footage.

The club expressed their intention to “explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”

Notably, Liverpool has not explicitly requested a replay of the game.

However, the Premier League’s own regulations suggest that such an outcome is within the realm of possibility.

Sports lawyer Stephen Taylor Heath shed light on this, stating that

“Rule L18 outlines that the Premier League board has the power to order a league match to be replayed provided that a recommendation to that effect has been made by a commission under rule W51.”

He continued by explaining that

“In addition to this, under rule W1, the Premier League’s board has the power to inquire about any suspected breach of rules, including those made by a match official, while rule N4 ensures that each match official agrees to be bound by the laws of the game as well as any protocols and FA rules.”
