TopNaija's Premier League Wrap-up: Week 3

The premier league weekend comes to an end for week 3 run of games, and there is one narrative sailing the internet now; what is Arne Slot doing?

The Dutchman has arrived at Liverpool and in his very first premier league season as manager, taking notes and kicking every record he has available to him. The former Feyenoord boss after week 3’s games, has shown he is up to the challenge of moving Liverpool beyond Jurgen Klopp’s era and what better way to make that statement than to do so against the Reds arch rivals, Manchester United at their own home turf.

Liverpool in Sunday’s dramatic fixture, was able to see out a 0-3 away win at Old Trafford, a very rare feat no Liverpool head coach has done in their very first season in charge of the club since George Kay and Bob Paisley. Thanks to clinical finishes from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, the Merseyside men returned home with 3-added points to their points tally in the premier league table.

Trent Alexander Arnold however will have the Video Assistant Referee to curse after the off-pitch decision to chalk off his goal, stole his ‘Steven Gerrard-esque’ moment away from him. As a Liverpool born and bred player, he surely has been waiting for that one.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool: We need to talk about Slot

Newcastle United versus Tottenham Hotspur was another premier league tale though. The Magpies came out eventual winners over Spurs at the Saint James’ Park in a 2-1 score line shortly after Tottenham’s equalizer.

On same day, Chelsea thought week 3 would take a similar shape as week 2 in that they saw out a 2-6 win after Nicolas Jackson had opened the scoring. Nicolas Jackson did score this weekend, but his goal was sadly not enough to seal a second win for the Blues against Crystal Palace who courtesy of Eberechi Eze were able to see out a 1-1 draw at full time whistle.

The 1-1 draw went the same for Chelsea’s arch London rivals, Arsenal who likewise took the lead via a former Chelsea player, Kai Havertz but sadly could not claim all 3-points against Brighton and Hove Albion whose equalizer by Joao Pedro, forced the Gunners to drop 2 vital points at the table. The controversial Declan Rice red card was however the highlight of Saturday afternoon’s premier league topic.

Brentford versus Southampton resulted in a predictable result, with the Bees seeing off the Saints in a 3-1 win courtesy of a brace by Bryan Mbeumo and a goal by Yoane Wissa to gift Brentford the win. Yukinari Sugawara had the gift of a consolation for the newly promoted side.

Everton versus AFC Bournemouth was another story however. The Toffees looked to be on the road to bouncing back from 2 consecutive defeats when they took a 2-0 lead against the Cherries. However a late drama saw Bournemouth mastermind a comeback to run out 2-3 winners on the day.

For Everton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane were on the score sheet with the false lead, before Antoine Semenyo, Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra sealed the actual win.

Ipswich Town got to finally show the business they came to the premier league for when they saw out a single point against Fulham in 1-1 draw courtesy of goals from Liam Delap for the Tractor boys and Adama Traore for Fulham. Traore needed to rescue the point for his side after Ipswich had taken the lead.

Leicester City versus Aston Villa was a 1-2 win that felt unfair to Leicester who mounted a late pressure against Unai Emery’s side and nearly secured a point had referee decision gone in favor of the Foxes. Goals from Amadou Onana and Jhon Durán was able to seal the win for Aston Villa, with Facundo Buonanotte on the score sheet for Leicester City.

The game though will be remembered for its onslaught of yellow cards, racking up to 10-yellow cards including the Leicester City coach, Steve Cooper.

Nottingham Forest versus Wolverhampton Wanderers was another 1-1 draw, the 4th of the weekend as both sides could not find the winner after both teams scored within 2-minutes of each other in the first half. The premier league game raked a sum total of 8-yellow cards.
