- Nigerians, particularly human rights activists took to the streets of Abuja, Lagos, Benue, Rivers and Kaduna on Thursday protesting the alleged rape of a 13-year-old Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbaje by her guardian, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja of Benue State Polytechnic and his son.
The protesters, who stormed the streets in their numbers, called on the state and the federal governments not to sweep the case under the carpet.
- The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) has said the killings of its aid workers by Boko Haram insurgents will not stop the organisation from rendering its services to Nigeria.
Patricia Danzi, ICRC Regional Director for Africa said this while speaking to newsmen in Maiduguri while commiserating with the families of Saifura Khorsa and Hauwa Liman, two of the aid workers killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno, NAN reports.
- The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has termed the action of former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, where he fed over 150 people, including detainees and visitors two days ago as outrageous, preposterous and embarrassing.
MURIC said Fayose took his stomach infrastructure initiative to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, office and fed detainees who in turn allegedly sang the national anthem after their stomachs had been filled.
- The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Thursday said the Nigeria military was carrying out 7 operations across the country.
Director, Defence Information, Brig-Gen. John Agim, explained that each operation has its own modus operandi and was geared towards enhancing a conducive and stable environment for socio-economic activities and the safety of Nigerians, as well as preventing bandits and outlaws from escaping to other peaceful areas.
- The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, said money shared by politicians was a major cause of clashes and street fights among political thugs.
Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, who said this during a town hall security summit held in Lagos Island.
- Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has said that the corporation would begin free train ride service from Itakpe to Warri.
Okhiria said on Thursday while inspecting the ongoing construction of train terminal at Ujevwu community in Delta, that the free ride will be for one month.
- The Kano State House of Assembly Investigative Committee on the bribery allegation against Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has said it will also investigate evidences presented.
Chairman of the panel, Babba Dan Agundi, said, they will give the Governor’s side the right to analyse the video.
- The Emir of Kano, HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said he is deeply worried whenever the topic of restructuring Nigeria is being debated among the elite.
According to him, it was uncertain that restructuring would end the problems of the country.
- The Federal Government, 36 States and FCT as well as 774 Local Governments on Thursday shared N698.7billion for the month of September.
The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said this in Abuja, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). She said N569.28 billion which was received as gross statutory revenue, was lower than the N587.1 billion shared in August by N17.8 billion.
- The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in the July 14 election in Ekiti state, Prof. Olusola Kolapo, has told the state election petition tribunal to declare him as the duly elected governor of the state.
Akolapo, while testifying before the tribunal sitting at the FCT High Court, Apo, Abuja, stated that the tribunal should in the alternative declare the election inconclusive or nullify it and order for a fresh election.
