1. The All Progressives Congress, APC, Enugu State chapter Monday suspended indefinite its chairman, Barr. Ben Nwoye. This was announced Monday morning after a State Working Committee meeting of the party, which was presided over by the Deputy Chairman, Mr. A.C Udeh. Exco members accused Nwoye of abuse of office.

2. Former Nigeria Permanent Representative to the United Nation, UN, Alhaji Maitama Sule is dead. Report says the former Minister of Petroleum took ill over the weekend and was flown to Cairo, Egypt. His death was confirmed in a terse statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information in Kano State, Mallam Mohammed Garba. Sule was 87.

3. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday revealed that about 700 Boko Haram insurgents around the fringes of Sambisa Forest in Borno, have surrendered. Buratai stated this during a Photo/Arts Exhibition, which was part of activities to mark the week-long Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).

4. The Naira on Monday appreciated against the dollar at the parallel market. The currency gained two points to exchange at N365 to the dollar. Pound sterling and the Euro traded at N465 and N412 respectively. At the interbank market, the Naira closed officially at N305.95 to the dollar.

5. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday made public the timetable for the recall of Senator Dino Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, in the Senate. INEC Secretary, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, issued the timetable on behalf of the commission. Verification of signatures will commence on August 19.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, said on Monday that even in peace, Nigeria is in a state of emergency due to the deployment of military personnel in over 28 states in the country. Dogara expressed his reservation and shock on the massive deployment, lamenting that the army has now taken over civil and security duties constitutionally reserved for the Nigeria Police.

7. The National Universities Commission on Monday approved the upgrading of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology. The commission made the disclosure via a letter sent to the Ogun State Government on Monday. Rurum’s resignation follows allegations that he collected N100 million to end the investigation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II. His resignation was confirmed in a letter read at plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Ibrahim Chidariof.

10. The Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe has uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing factory in the State and recovered guns, cartridges and military equipment. JTF said this followed an intelligence report of an arms manufacturing gang in the Arhavwarien, Ughelli area of Delta State. The gang supplied deadly ammunition to kidnappers, cultists, sea robbers, militants and armed robbers.
