Tinubu warns against foreign interference in West Africa

President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning against the use of West Africa as a stage for global power struggles, calling for genuine partnerships to address pressing socio-economic challenges.

Speaking at the Nigeria-France Business Forum in Paris on November 29, 2024, Tinubu criticized the exploitation of the region’s resources and people, emphasizing the need for collaborations that prioritize the welfare of West Africans.

“We have serious socio-economic challenges to confront in our region. What we do not need are actors using the land and people of West Africa as pawns in power games unrelated to our well-being,” Tinubu stated.

The president commended France for hosting the forum, underlining the importance of strengthening bilateral ties and highlighting France’s potential to contribute constructively to the region’s development.

Tinubu shared insights into Nigeria’s economic growth, noting a GDP increase to 3.46% in Q3 2024, compared to 2.54% in the same period the previous year. He credited this to bold reforms aimed at attracting foreign direct investments in key sectors like agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and ICT.

“My vision for Nigeria transcends GDP figures. It is about eradicating hunger, creating jobs, ensuring stable electricity, and establishing Nigeria as an industrial and agricultural powerhouse,” Tinubu emphasized.

Tinubu detailed initiatives to improve Nigeria’s business climate, including regulatory reforms by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC). He also outlined investment incentives like tax holidays, duty-free imports for critical projects, and export grants for non-oil sectors.

Addressing French investors, Tinubu called for stronger economic ties, assuring them of Nigeria’s readiness to create a favorable investment climate. “Nigeria is not just a destination; it is a place of destiny,” he remarked, inviting businesses to explore opportunities in energy, logistics, banking, and infrastructure.

Tinubu concluded with a call for partnerships based on mutual respect, urging stakeholders to focus on sustainable growth and regional stability. “Together, we can overcome the imbalances of the past and chart a new course for a brighter future,” he said.

The forum highlighted areas for collaboration between Nigeria and France, promising enhanced relations and shared prosperity for both nations.
