Tinubu launches national health fellows programme for enhanced healthcare across Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has given the green light to the National Health Fellows Programme, which aims to deploy young Nigerian fellows to all 774 local government areas across the country.
The announcement came from Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement released on Monday in Abuja.
This initiative is part of Tinubu’s efforts to upgrade existing primary healthcare centres and build over 8,800 new ones nationwide.
These centres are meant to provide accessible and high-quality healthcare services, alongside new social accountability measures.
Under the programme, well-trained fellows will monitor and track the development and performance of Primary Healthcare Centres nationwide, assessing their performance against financial allocations.
The fellowship programme will operate within the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Fellows will be recruited, compensated, and equipped with the necessary tools for effective monitoring.
Tinubu, the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, trusts in the capability of young Nigerians to contribute to this nation-building task.
Ngelale stressed that fellows will be responsible for daily monitoring and tracking of health reforms in their areas, aiming to improve service provision for Nigerians.
