Tinubu honours Ogoni martyrs, calls for unity, healing

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to promoting unity and reconciliation among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

In a message commemorating the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, Tinubu paid tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in the Ogoni struggle, specifically honouring the sacrifices made by community leaders, including Ken Saro-Wiwa, who were executed in 1995.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized his support for the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and the Ogoni community.

He praised this year’s commemoration theme, “After Price, Comes Prise,” as a reminder of the collective responsibility to learn from past struggles.

“We honor their memory by pledging to work towards a future of peace, justice, and sustainable development,” Tinubu said, reaffirming that his government is committed to addressing historical grievances, especially those affecting Niger Delta communities.

The President outlined his vision for a united Nigeria built through dialogue and mutual respect.

He further referenced Nigeria’s history of oil exploration beginning in Ogoniland in 1958 and the subsequent environmental struggles that led to harsh repression.

“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us commit to ensuring that all Nigerians are respected, and such injustices are not repeated,” he stated, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to fostering a peaceful and inclusive nation.
