“Tinubu encouraged Buhari to print trillions in 2020” – Atiku’s aide fires hot at finance minister
Paul Ibe, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar of PDP, criticized President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
He criticized Edun for accusing former President Muhammadu Buhari of causing Nigeria’s current inflation and hardship.
Ibe claimed that Tinubu had previously advised former President Muhammadu Buhari to print naira in 2020.
During his criticism of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, Ibe revealed details about the printing of N22.7 trillion under Buhari’s administration.
According to Edun, the printing of N22.7 trillion by the Central Bank of Nigeria in the name of a Ways and Means loan under Buhari’s government and ex-CBN governor Godwin Emefiele was responsible for the current rising inflation and economic hardship in Nigeria.
During a discussion with the Senate Committee on Finance, the minister criticized the previous administration’s handling of loans amounting to N22.7 trillion, describing it as haphazard.
According to him, the excessive spending of the overdraft obtained from the CBN during Emefiele’s tenure was a major factor in the nation’s food and security challenges.
The speaker promised to conduct an audit of the CBN printing over the past eight years during Tinubu’s administration.
In response, Ibe criticized the minister’s statement, emphasizing that Tinubu influenced Buhari to take such an irresponsible course of action in 2020.
