Tinubu demands justice after inhumane treatment of Super Eagles in Libya

President Bola Tinubu has urged for prompt justice after the maltreatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at a Libyan airport.

The traumatic situation suffered by the national football team at the hands of their hosts and Libyan officials prompted the Nigerian Football Federation to withdraw the Super Eagles from the match set for Tuesday.

However, President Tinubu in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Monday said he “expects the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation and recommend appropriate action against those who wilfully violated the organisation’s Statutes and Regulations.”

The President praised the prompt work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in dealing with the regrettable occurrence and securing our athletes’ safe return.

He praised the athletes for keeping their spirits up throughout the agonizing situation in Libya.

The Nigerian leader said he “recognises football’s unifying power in bringing nations and people together and views the treatment of our citizens as unsportsmanlike and inhumane, a stark contrast to the spirit of the game he deeply appreciates.”

President Tinubu urged all supporters of the round-leather game, as well as authorities, to band together and collaborate to avoid and overcome such incidents.
