"Time to move past these Super Eagles players" — Victor Ikpeba

Former Nigerian football star Victor Ikpeba has delivered a scathing critique of the Super Eagles following their shocking 2-1 loss to Rwanda in Uyo, calling for an urgent overhaul of the squad.

The defeat, which ended Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the qualifiers, has sparked widespread discontent among fans and pundits alike.

Caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen made the bold decision to rest key players like Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Alex Iwobi, handing opportunities to fringe players to prove their worth. However, the gamble backfired, with the squad delivering a lackluster performance that left fans questioning the team’s depth.

Ikpeba, speaking on Monday Night Football on SuperSport, didn’t mince words.

“This was a chance for the other players in the squad to show whether they are good enough to be part of the national team,” Ikpeba said. “Unfortunately, they failed to turn up. They didn’t do well for themselves and the fans.”

The former African Player of the Year argued that the p00r showing underscores a deeper issue in the team—a lack of competition and quality in the squad. He urged the inclusion of fresh talent to shake things up and raise the team’s standards.

“There is a need for new players to be called up to create more competition in the team,” Ikpeba emphasized, adding that the current setup risks stagnation if drastic changes aren’t made.
