“They need to move on” — Nigerian artiste on Manchester United
In an exclusive interview with PUNCH’s Peter Akinbo, popular Nigerian rapper, Michael Stephens, widely known as Ruggedman, delved into his passion for football, expressing thoughts on the Super Eagles, Manchester United, and individual players like Victor Osimhen.
Addressing the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ruggedman shared his perspective on the Super Eagles’ chances of clinching victory.
Despite his patriotic optimism, he acknowledged the team’s recent setbacks in warm-up matches and concerns over political influences in player selection. He remarked,
“I hope we do, but we all know games are not won by hoping.”
The rapper also took the opportunity to praise his friend, Victor Osimhen, highlighting the footballer’s impressive achievements, including breaking records and securing the African Best Player award. Ruggedman emphasized Osimhen’s phenomenal performance in the Serie A last season.
Switching focus to his allegiance to Manchester United, the musician did not mince words about the team’s current struggles in the ongoing season.
Describing it as “terrible,” he expressed disappointment in certain players who appear to have lost motivation and are content with hefty paychecks.
Ruggedman specifically criticized Anthony Martial for rejecting a loan move and called for the removal of underperforming players, including Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Diogo Dalot, and Marcus Rashford, whom he suggested had burnt out.
“A lot of the weak, unproductive players need to be moved out, especially the ones on very high wages. They are not contributing anything to justify the money they are being paid.
“Players like Martial, (Harry) Maguire, Scott (McTominay), and (Diogo) Dalot need to go. Unfortunately, (Marcus) Rashford seems to have burnt out and only plays selfish football, always trying to shoot and score even when it is obvious he cannot. He needs to go too. Then Bruno (Fernandes) needs to go too.”
Ruggedman emphasized the need for fresh, young, and hungry talents in the squad and singled out Bruno Fernandes for criticism, citing issues with ball possession and unsuccessful passes.
