Obasanjo blasts Nigerian Senate: “You’re paying yourselves to ruin the nation!”
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has unleashed a scathing critique of the Nigerian Senate, accusing it of being complicit in the country’s economic and social collapse.
In a fiery speech, Obasanjo didn’t mince words as he called out the legislative body for allegedly exploiting their positions to line their pockets while Nigeria teeters on the brink of disaster.
In his address, Obasanjo took aim at the self-awarded salaries and allowances that he claims have contributed to the skyrocketing cost of governance. He didn’t hold back, highlighting the absurdity of the perks senators grant themselves—from “newspaper allowances” to “pant allowances”—all while the nation struggles under the weight of economic hardship.

“It’s not right, it’s not right, it’s not right,” Obasanjo repeated emphatically, condemning the Senate for what he described as immoral and self-serving practices. He also pointed fingers at the executive branch, accusing it of colluding with the Senate to siphon off funds, citing instances where exorbitant amounts were allegedly funneled to senators.
Obasanjo’s biting remarks have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, sparking debate over the ethics and responsibilities of those in power. As Nigeria faces mounting challenges, Obasanjo’s words serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform and accountability at the highest levels of government.
Here is an excerpt from his quoted address:
“Look at in your own case without due respect you are not supposed to fix your salary or your allowances it’s supposed to be done by the revenue mobilization, but you decide what you pay yourself,”
“The allowances that you give yourself — newspaper allowances, pant allowances, shitting allowances,” the former president blasts.
Olusegun Obasanjo goes on further;
“You give yourself all sorts of things without due respect and you know it’s not right it is not right it is not right for me to be the one to will think that I mean what I paid myself is immoral and then you are doing it the Senate is doing it and you beat your chest and in some cases even the executive give you what you are not impacted to you all got 200 million dollar an hour”
