The Reason Azpilicueta signed a new Contract with Chelsea

As per reports, Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta is set to remain at Chelsea for 2 more seasons.

The summer transfer window has been the most surprising as it has ever been in recent years as it followed a lot of speculations, hijackings and so much more.

One particularly interesting tale in it all was the one between Chelsea and Barcelona in the window that became something of a transfer clasico considering Barcelona kept going after and winning over Chelsea’s targets.

But that seems to stop though as Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta is set to ditch the prospects of joining the Catalans and instead remain at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard instead of returning to Spain to play out the remaining part of his career in the La Liga chose to dedicate 2 more seasons to Chelsea according to reports of his new contract.

But what prompted the move? Considering few weeks ago, Thomas Tuchel had actively complained about Barcelona’s actions against Chelsea and had even ruled that Azpilicueta could very much leave the club.

It was widely reported that the Chelsea captain was interested in leaving the Blues to join the Catalans, so what tipped him off?

According to reports, the Spaniard was pushing for a move due to the fact he wanted his future secured and guaranteed before the Premier League season started.

And though, Barcelona had every interest in signing the Chelsea player, the fact they could not guaranty they could register him in their squad or that they had issues with Financial Fair Play became something of a turn off.

This forced the 32 year old into sealing an agreement with Chelsea according to Gerard Romero for a 2 more year extension at Stamford Bridge.

Azpilicueta is said to have phoned Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez, informing him of his decision to continue with Chelsea.

Ahead of Chelsea’s contract extension with Cesar Azpilicueta, the club is set to complete the deal for Brighton’s full back, Marc Cucurella ahead of the Premier League window.
