But as the reality is, Manchester City ultimately triumphed over Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, with the German having to face the media to account for why the Reds lost.
The reasons behind Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Thursday have been outlined by Jurgen Klopp.
The five-goal thriller favored Pep Guardiola’s City, and Klopp attributed the loss on the Reds’ defending, saying all the goals they gave up were “totally unjustified.”
Holders At the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool was eliminated from the competition after allowing the Premier League champions to advance to the quarterfinals thanks to goals from Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, and Nathan Ake.
All of the goals scored by the home team, in Klopp’s opinion, were avoidable.
Klopp told Sky Sports: “We played a formation that we haven’t played for a long time…, we needed time to adapt.
“In the first 15 minutes, we had real problems and that killed our confidence and conviction a little bit.
“The goals we conceded were completely unnecessary…”
