“The only thing we can win this year is the FA Cup” — Paul Scholes
Manchester United legend and former player, Paul Scholes has slammed the team’s performance on the pitch in Wednesday night’s defeat to Bundesliga side, Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
In a Champions League tie that showed some promise by the Red Devils, the premier league side ultimately fell to a 4-3 defeat at the final whistle, thanks to individual errors and a lack of concentration from Erik ten Hag’s side.
In his analysis of the game, Paul Scholes considers the current season as an offshoot of the previous season that saw Manchester United go out with just a Carabao Cup trophy at the end of the season.
According to the Man United hero, this season is no different as he predicts the Old Trafford side to do so again with either the Carabao Cup title or the FA Cup.
He however does not see the Red Devils proving a contender for serious trophies this season judging from their performance against Bayern Munich in Germany.
Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro’s brace reduced the deficit goals for the Red Devils side when the team had trailed at varying intervals by 2 goals to Bayern Munich.
Paul Scholes speaking on TNT Sports as a pundit, said of his former club;
“They [Man United] have had spells in every game they have lost this season where they have done okay, but that is not good enough.
“There is a softness and weakness there and once they concede one, you need to say: ‘Come on, in the next five minutes let’s stay in the game’, and before you know it, they score another goal.
“I think this is almost going to be an identical season to last year. They are a cup team.
“They could possibly win the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, they are just not at this level yet. I think the summer has hindered them from getting where that next level is and we saw tonight that they are absolutely below this level.”
He added,
“When you look at the game as a whole, I thought Manchester United did well but still conceded two goals early on and lacked that concentration. Those three goals flattered United though.
“I thought they were outclassed in the second half really. There is quality experience in this team, but it’s not being used right now.”
