“The Instagram age is ruining our industry” — Kanayo O. Kanayo
“Nollywood is not a place for gay and lesbianism,” — Nigerian actor, Kanayo hits at the modern trend taking over the Nigerian film cinema.
Nollywood thespian, Kanayo O. Kanayo has hit out at a faction of the industry that has been driving the scene with negative narratives and spotlights.
In an exclusive interview with Afia TV, the actor expressed his concerns about the growing influence of Instagram stars and emphasized the need to prioritize creativity over sensationalism in the movie industry.
Kanayo O. Kanayo firmly asserted that Nollywood should remain a hub for artistic expression, as opposed to becoming a platform for controversial trends like Brazilian Butt Lifts, illicit activities, or promoting sexual orientation.
He stressed that it is essential for the industry to maintain its focus on nurturing talent and fostering creativity.
Addressing the rising prominence of Instagram stars in Nollywood, Kanayo cautioned against equating fame on social media with genuine acting prowess.
He noted that the fame of many Instagram stars tends to be fleeting and advised aspiring actors to avoid the temptation of following this path.
The veteran actor underlined that anyone is welcome to join the movie industry, but emphasized the importance of having a genuine calling for acting, rather than being driven solely by financial gain.
He suggested that aspiring actors should view Nollywood as a place to refine and enhance their talents, rather than as a quick route to financial success.
Kanayo O. Kanayo further emphasized that Nollywood should not serve as a platform for amateurs, but rather as a space where individuals can hone their skills and contribute meaningfully to the art of storytelling through cinema.
He stated,
“Nollywood should not be a ground for BBL; bum bum enlargement. Nollywood should not be a ground for people doing runs.
“Nollywood should not be where people’s dollars are stolen in hotels. All these Nollywood girls, it is not a ground for gay or lesbianism. It is a ground for creativity.”
Kanayo O. Kanayo encouraged individuals interested in pursuing acting to evaluate whether they possess a genuine passion for the craft.
He emphasized that joining the film industry should not be a hasty decision made in the face of personal or financial struggles, and that some level of education and dedication to the art is essential.
The actor also expressed concerns about certain trends and practices that have gained prominence within the industry, urging a return to Nollywood’s core values of creativity, talent development, and storytelling.
While recognizing that everyone is welcome in Nollywood, Kanayo O. Kanayo issued a cautionary note, particularly to Instagram stars, advising them to avoid seeking temporary fame and instead focus on long-term contributions to the world of cinema.
