The difference between Messi and Ronaldo — Referee explains
In a recent revelation by Honduran referee Said Martinez, the stark differences in managing two footballing icons, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, on the pitch were unveiled.
Martinez, having officiated matches involving both players, shed light on their distinct personalities and interactions during games.
“Both are great players, each with their own unique style,” Martinez began. “I don’t think one stands out over the other.”
According to Martinez, refereeing Messi portrays a relatively calmer experience. “He is a player who focuses on the game and the ball, considering his moves and strategy,” Martinez stated.
In contrast, handling Ronaldo’s on-field demeanor tends to be more expressive, although not necessarily disrespectful.
“Refereeing them is a privilege anyone would like to have,” Martinez remarked, reminiscing about witnessing both players execute remarkable free kicks.
Martinez recalled personal encounters with the footballing giants, citing memorable moments of interaction.
“With Messi, we exchanged handshakes before the game. He expressed gratitude when welcomed,” Martinez shared.
“Post-match, amid the crowd chanting his name, he made a point to shake my hand—an act I’ll forever cherish.”
Conversely, Martinez recounted an incident involving Ronaldo, where the Portuguese star confronted him over disallowed goals, exhibiting discontent even towards the VAR decisions.
“Before the second half began, I approached Ronaldo to express my displeasure with his approach,” Martinez disclosed.
“To his credit, he admitted fault and agreed with my perspective. He then shifted focus to the game and delivered a phenomenal free-kick goal that aided his team’s victory.”
