Tanker Hero given Key to the City
It is very much the tale meant to be told in action films, but this one happened in real life as the tanker hero who risked his life to protect thousands is recognized and given key to the city.
The Delta State Government have proceeded to reward Ejiro Otarigho for his heroic efforts with a cheque of N2 million, a plaque and a letter of commendation for his display of heroism and humanity.
Otarigho had boldly driven a burning tanker away from a densely populated zone to a safe place where it exploded into an inferno last Saturday in Delta State, saving a number of lives that could have been caught had it exploded.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, made the presentation to Otarigho in Asaba on Thursday.
He said:
“We commended him for the rare display of patriotism, humanity, bravery and heroism, the incident would have resulted in the death of many persons and destruction of property at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area where the fire started.
“Mr Otarigho has become the new face of Delta and Youth Ambassador for his display of heroism, the state government will continue to celebrate him.”
The Governor explained through his representative that what he did could not be translated to money but he should understand that people appreciated him for the action.
The hero remarked that being appreciated by people along with other accolades for his action showed that doing good for the public was never in vain and thanked all for appreciating him.
The wife of the heroic driver in her statement thanked God for everything, saying that she was shocked at the initial stage when she received the news but appreciated her husband for his patriotism and heroism.
The praise for the tanker hero will show inspire many into being selfless heroes eventually if courage is rewarded and greatly valued by all.
