Super Eagles Squad For The AFCON Qualifier

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has announced a 23-man squad for Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier double-header against Guinea-Bissau. The matches are set to be played on March 24 and March 28.

The squad includes regulars like Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Wilfred Ndidi, and Kelechi Iheanacho. Rivers United goalkeeper, Victor Sochima, has earned his maiden invitation to the team, while Boavista defender, Bruno Onyemaechi, is invited for the second time. Two Flying Eagles players, Chijoke Aniagboso and Daniel Bamaiyi, were also included in the squad.

However, vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has missed out due to injury, while Torino defender Ola Aina was among the surprise absentees. Former first-choice goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been dropped from the squad.

The Super Eagles will host the Djurtus in the first leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday, March 24. The reverse fixture will take place in Bissau four days later.

Nigeria currently sits on top of Group C in the AFCON qualifiers with 6 points, while Guinea-Bissau is in second place with 4 points. The other teams in the group, Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe, have 1 and 0 points, respectively.

The Super Eagles have a chance to secure their place in the 2023 AFCON tournament with two wins against Guinea-Bissau. They will also be looking to build on their impressive form in the qualifiers so far, having won two matches and drawn two.
