Nigerian government announces date to open student loan portal

The Nigerian government has announced that the application portal for the eagerly awaited student loan program will officially open on May 24.

This information was revealed by Nasir Ayitogo, spokesman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), in a statement released on Thursday.

The loan program is designed to help students finance their education without facing financial obstacles.

“The management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, is excited to announce May 24, 2024, as the official date for the opening of the student loan application portal,” the statement reads.

“This marks a significant milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to promoting accessible and inclusive education for all Nigerian students. Through this portal, students can easily apply for loans to support their academic pursuits without financial barriers.”

This announcement comes eight months after President Tinubu initially stated that the program would not commence in September 2023, postponing its start.

The student loan scheme is part of the government’s broader initiative to make education more accessible and support the educational goals of Nigerian students.
