A student of the Osun State University, Osogbo has been attacked and set ablaze by cult members and was left for dead before residents came to his rescue.

According to the management of the Osun State University, Osogbo, its security unit is working with the police to ensure that suspected cultists who attacked a student of the school, Victor Oke, at the Akede area of Osogbo, on Saturday, are arrested and prosecuted.

A statement by the varsity Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, in Osogbo, on Monday, explained that Oke, a part-time final-year Political Science student, was being forced to join a cult, but refused.

Adesoji said the student failed to show up for his final paper on Saturday, and when his parents were contacted, it was discovered that he had been attacked by cultists.

He said, “It was gathered that some of the eyewitnesses living in the area where the incident happened reported that they heard Oke Ademiju Victor shouting that he was not joining their cult, while they continued to hit him with cutlasses, hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.

“We have since been following up with the parents and it is confirmed that he was rushed to the university’s teaching hospital for treatment and later moved to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.”

Osun State University had its first convocation ceremony in 2011 under the administration of state Governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The university had a reputation of not being involved in the Nationwide ASUU strike until the 2013 ASUU strike which lasted for over five months. The university also has a reputation as one of the fastest universities in Nigeria, based on the quick academic calendar the school operates.
