Steven Gerrard In Talks With New Club Following Villa Sack

Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard is reportedly in talks with Turkish club Trabzonspor over the vacant managerial position. Gerrard, who was recently sacked by Aston Villa in October 2022, has been out of a job for several months and is believed to be keen on returning to management as soon as possible.

According to reports, the 42-year-old flew to Istanbul earlier this week to meet with Ertugrul Dogan, who is running to become the president of Trabzonspor. The two had dinner together, and it is believed that Dogan has promised to hire Steven Gerrard as manager if he wins the forthcoming election.

Trabzonspor, who are currently sixth in the Turkish Super Lig, have been without a permanent manager since Abdullah Avci resigned in December 2022. Gerrard is said to be interested in the role and could be a good fit for the club, which has a strong fanbase and a rich history in Turkish football.

Gerrard had a successful stint as a manager at Rangers, leading the Glasgow-based club to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season, ending Celtic’s nine-year dominance. He then moved to Aston Villa to take his first job in England’s topflight but lasted less than a year before being sacked.

The former Liverpool and England captain was also linked with the vacant Poland job earlier this year, but the Polish FA eventually appointed Fernando Santos.

If Steven Gerrard were to take over at Trabzonspor, he would inherit a team that has won 11 of their 23 matches so far this season. The club has a strong fanbase and a history of success, having won six Turkish Super Lig titles and eight Turkish Cups.

It remains to be seen whether Gerrard and Trabzonspor will come to an agreement, but the talks are a clear indication that the former midfielder is keen to get back into management as soon as possible. With his experience and track record, he could be the perfect candidate to lead Trabzonspor to success in the Turkish Super Lig and beyond.
