Social Media rains on Harry Maguire after own goal vs. Scotland

Manchester United defender and former Captain, Harry Maguire, is one footballer who never seems to see the end of the stick, and after Tuesday’s display in an international friendly game versus Scotland, the England Centre-Back sees the banter fall on him again.

The former Leicester City player saw a well-timed cross into the England box by Liverpool star, Andrew Robertson, controlled into his team’s net while attempting a clearance.

This has resulted in the Harry Maguire memes popping up the media space, with the internet having a word for the England international, and as expected, some of the words took on harsher tones.

One fan humorously remarked,

“I have never seen a player with a greater commitment to banter than Harry Maguire. He will be studied in schools for generations to come.”

Another joked,

“Steve Clarke’s gamble of throwing Harry Maguire on pays off.”

The harsher criticisms, stated,

“An embarrassment for all concerned that Harry Maguire plays for Manchester United Football Club. Shambles.”

With another comment reading,

“Harry Maguire is like a Main Character in a sh** American Comedy where everything goes wrong at every opportunity.”

While another termed Harry Maguire, a ‘calamity’,

“Harry Maguire is an absolute calamity. A walking disaster. A punchline. So bereft of any talent or natural intuition about how to defend.”

The England manager, Gareth Southgate however has hit out at Harry Maguire’s critics post-match, saying;

“It’s a joke, I’ve never known a player treated like he is, not by the Scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is – It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen.”
