Snippets into President Tinubu’s meeting with State Governors

Following a high-level meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors of Nigeria, convened under the umbrella of the Nigeria Governors Forum, details of the discussions have emerged.

Held on Thursday within the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, the meeting was convened to tackle pressing issues including insecurity, economic challenges, and general hardship prevailing in the country.

In attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, among others.

Addressing State House correspondents after the session, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed that the core focus of the meeting revolved around the potential establishment of state police, a longstanding contentious issue.

Idris indicated that the government is now considering the resolution of the state police controversy as a means to address the escalating insecurity in the nation.

Furthermore, discussions during the meeting acknowledged the need for security enhancements, with a particular emphasis on bolstering the numerical strength of forest rangers and exploring the viability of State Police.

Turning to the pressing food crisis, Idris disclosed that the National Security Adviser, the Director General of State Services, and the Inspector General of Police have been tasked with collaborating with state governors to tackle concerns related to hoarding, especially amidst soaring commodity prices.

In a bid to combat food shortages and enhance agricultural productivity, leaders emphasized the importance of increased investments in agriculture, with a directive to halt food importation to bolster Nigeria’s self-sufficiency and potential as a net exporter.
