Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, a Nigerian musician and performer, was arraigned at the Ifo High Court in Ogun State, Nigeria on Monday morning on six counts of assault.

The charges followed his arrest on Friday, after he had resisted arrest by policemen who had stormed his office on Thursday.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, there are additional charges against Portable, including assault on a man in Ota who had filed a petition to the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State. Adejobi emphasized that Portable’s many pending cases of assaults on people and attacks will be investigated, as people have complained against him. Adejobi tweeted that there is no sentiment in law, and that Portable has no constitutional immunity anyway.

The arraignment of Portable on multiple charges of assault is a clear message from law enforcement agencies that impunity and lawlessness will not be tolerated in Nigeria. The arrest and subsequent arraignment of a popular musician like Portable, who has a significant following, also serves as a warning to other celebrities that they are not above the law, and they will face the full consequences of their actions.

The Nigerian justice system has often been criticized for its perceived leniency towards celebrities and influential people who break the law. However, the arraignment of Portable shows that the Nigerian government is committed to ensuring that justice is served, regardless of social status or influence.

Portable’s case is a reminder to Nigerians that assault and violence against fellow citizens are serious crimes that have severe consequences. In recent times, there has been an increase in cases of assault, particularly against women and vulnerable groups. It is imperative that law enforcement agencies act decisively to bring perpetrators of such crimes to justice.
