Senate approves $2.2B loan for Nigeria

The Senate has resolved to establish an ad hoc committee to organize a national summit addressing the herders and farmers conflict in Nigeria.

This decision came after adopting a motion on the urgent need for rehabilitation of communities in Omala, Kogi State, following recent gunmen attacks.

Senator Isah Jibrin (APC-Kogi) presented the motion at Tuesday’s plenary, highlighting the recurring attacks in Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi, Bagaji, and Bagana communities.

He noted that these attacks had resulted in numerous killings, destruction of property and farmlands, and the displacement of over 30,000 residents.

Jibrin reported that on April 5, gunmen invaded the communities, killing 21 residents, including women and children, and destroying their farm produce.

Further attacks on April 30 in Ajokpachi Odo left three more dead and rendered the community desolate, with no health facilities to cater to survivors.

“These attacks have killed over 500 residents and caused the destruction of property worth hundreds of millions of naira,” Jibrin stated.

He emphasized the plight of displaced persons who wish to return to their homes but lack shelters and means of sustenance. Educational institutions and health centers have been destroyed, increasing mortality rates and making it difficult for children to access education.

Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) noted the ongoing problem of community attacks and called for the ranching of cattle to address the issue. Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo) supported the creation of an ad hoc committee to organize a public hearing to find a lasting solution to the conflict.

Senator Titus Zam (APC-Benue) suggested enacting an open grazing prohibition law to encourage cattle ranching.

The Senate observed a minute of silence for the departed souls in the affected communities.
