Senate passes bill to establish Maritime University

The Nigerian senate has passed the bill for the establishment of Maritime University of Nigeria, in Okerenkoko, Delta state, TopNaija.ng can confirm.

James Manager, senator representing Delta south, sponsored the bill.

The red chamber of the national assembly on Thursday said that the institution should be funded with 15 per cent of the annual budgetary allocation of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The senate also recommended additional sources of funding for the Maritime University.

“Additional funding for the university shall accrue from one per cent of the total annual budget of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources; 0.5 per cent of the total annual budget of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas; 0.3 per cent of the total annual budget of all the oil-producing companies operating in the Niger Delta area.”

The bill for its establishment of the Maritime University was passed following the report of the committee on tertiary education and TETFUND chaired by senator Barau Jibrin.

Following its passage at the senate, the bill will now be transmitted to the house of representatives and subsequently, to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The groundbreaking of the proposed school was done by former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.
