The Nigerian Senate has asked that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announce the results of the June 12, 1993 elections, TOPNAIJA.NG can confirm.

This is following President Muhammadu Buhari declaration that the date henceforth be celebrated as the country’s Democracy Day, and his conferment of the GCFR honor on its presumed winner MKO Abiola.

The Senate came to the resolution at the plenary on Thursday, saying that it is to ensure that entitlements are made to the families of M.K.O Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe.

Senator Abiodun Olujimi, raising the motion, said:

Mr President should endeavour that INEC announces the result of the election held on June 12th and declare Chief MKO Abiola as the winner as his family is still in existence.

Every right a President enjoys should be given to his family and the then Vice President, Baba Gana Kingibe should also enjoy all benefits as the Vice President.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, speaking in the motion, said that “the Constitution needs to be amended if June 12th is declared as Democracy Day.”

The upper chamber then resolved that June 12 should be a public holiday and May 29, for inauguration of newly elected officers.
