Sanwo-Olu urges reporters to avoid false news

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to reporters in the state and the nation to turn away from false news and follow the profession ethics.

Sanwo-Olu, who lauded the role of media in the growth of society, stated that the press reflected the society, uncovered evils, and overcame any issues between the government and the citizens.

The Governor disclosed this in a statement to commemorate World Press Freedom Day with the subject ‘information as a public good.’

He stated, “The theme of this year’s celebration is apt as information is knowledge. Equipped with the right information, the government and the governed will appreciate and understand issues, remove or reduce friction and act in the public good.”

Sanwo-Olu lauded reporters for strengthening democracy in Nigeria taking heed to guarantee that the profits of democracy are appreciated by everyone.

The Governor assured to not do anything to curtail press freedom.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or just World Press Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press.

It marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.

World Press Freedom Day serves as an event to inform citizens of the violations of press freedom. It is a reminder that publications and social media are censored, fined, suspended, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked and even murdered globally.
