Roy Keane continues to throw shade at Liverpool star

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane remains resolute in his views despite Liverpool Centre Back, Virgil van Dijk defending his post-match comments, signaling a continuation of the heated exchange between the two football figures.

Van Dijk’s remarks after Sunday’s clash at Anfield, where Liverpool faced Manchester United, stirred controversy. Expressing frustration, the Liverpool captain emphasized their dominance throughout the game, suggesting United relied on counter-attacks.

Responding swiftly to Van Dijk’s post-match interview, Keane launched into an extraordinary outburst on Sky Sports, branding the Liverpool skipper as “arrogant” and “disrespectful.”

He emphasized that Van Dijk should be reminded of Liverpool’s prolonged title drought, citing the club’s single title win in over three decades.

Despite Keane’s criticism, Van Dijk affirmed his stance, stating he harbored no regrets about his comments post-game.

Days later, Keane referenced Van Dijk again while discussing Manchester City’s match against Crystal Palace on the Stick to Football podcast sponsored by Sky Bet. Keane compared the reactions of City and United to their respective games, defending United’s approach against Liverpool.

“I saw Crystal Palace go to Manchester City – Crystal Palace are no Manchester United, and you should see the way they were set up, and we all praised Roy Hodgson and they managed to get a draw,” he said.

“I didn’t see anyone from City criticising Crystal Palace. The fact they scored in the game might be slightly different, but I think when you’re going into certain games, survival is the name of the game – United will take the point.”

Asserting his standpoint, Keane defended his criticism of Van Dijk, highlighting the differences in his own approach during his playing days.

He emphasized his reluctance to criticize teams directly and acknowledged the varying strategies employed by different sides in football.

“He [Virgil van Dijk] is entitled to his opinion as well, he’s entitled to maybe get something wrong. I’ve said things after games when I was at United and thought that it was a bit over the top, but that was generally against my own team.”

“I don’t think ever in my career I criticized a team for the way they played, because every team must find [something] different. You have to admire that’s part of the game as well.”

Keane reaffirmed his stance that every team has its unique approach and that part of the game involves appreciating these differences.
